Porous beta titanium bone implants optimised for strength and bio compatibility: design and fabrication (2011-2019)

Abstract

We aim to design and fabricate bio-compatible prototypes for a new generation of bone implants. These implants will have key biomechanical properties much closer to that of real bone and can be tailored to each patient¿s needs. Our multidisciplinary approach will lead to concurrent, synergistic advances in both mathematics and materials science. We will create high-resolution 3D designs for scaffolds that are optimized for strength, stiffness and bio-transport. These will then be fabricated from the latest generation of beta titanium using state-of-the-art selective laser melting equipment. Such customised devices will reduce surgery and rehabilitation times, and provide a solution for patients for whom current implants are not suitable.
