Multi-scale, two-phase flow in complex coal seam systems (2012-2015)

Abstract

As a major fossil fuel, coal provides about 85% of Australia¿s electricity production. However, coal mining has caused serious concerns with the impact of mining operation on the surrounding environment in addition to the CO2 emission from burning coal. This project aims to determine key factors and processes that underpin the hydraulic connectivity between an open-cut coal mine and adjacent rivers and aquifers combining field monitoring, laboratory experiments and numerical modeling. The research outcome will assist rigorous assessment and proper management of the environmental impact due to the mining operation. The findings will also shed light on the risks associated with underground coal mining and coal seam gas extraction.
