A fast, eco-friendly approach to the fabrication of low cost high performance titanium components (2014-2018)

Abstract

The high cost of titanium components has been the central issue that inhibits the wider application of titanium and its alloys, despite their outstanding properties. This project aims to develop a fast, eco-friendly approach to the fabrication of low cost high performance titanium components, based on the use of inexpensive titanium hydride ceramic powder and its unique characteristics uncovered recently. The outcomes will transform the current manufacturing practice of small to medium sized titanium components and enable substantial cost reduction. In addition, the key concepts developed will constitute an important basis for the further development of titanium hydride metallurgy.
