Locating Genes For Cognitive Traits Using Linkage And Association Analyses (2006-2008)

Abstract

This study aims to identify genes influencing cognitive ability by using varied measures of cognition in genetic linkage and association analyses, in a large sample of twins. Our preliminary linkage scans have shown significant linkage to a region on chromosome 2. We intend to fine-map this region to refine the area in which the functional gene is located. We will also use multivariate linkage analysis to increase the statistical power of finding a gene, and to help define the phenotype related to the gene. The location of genes for cognition will provide insight into biological functions of the brain which affect human intellect and may have future applications for treating cognitive difficulties arising from brain dysfunction.
