The Australian Copper-Uranium Transformation Research Hub (ARC Research Hub administered by the University of Adelaide) (2015-2020)

Abstract

South Australia is a significant copper province and includes one of the world¿s biggest mineral deposits at Olympic Dam, as well as other operations and prospects. However this resource is highly intermixed with radionuclides (atoms with an unstable nucleus) such as uranium that reduce the quality and therefore the marketability and value of copper concentrates. The Research Hub's aim is to develop, test and commercialise new, safe and cost-effective methods to separate radionuclides from copper concentrates derived from copper/uranium ores. It will harness the expertise and facilities of Australia's key 'resource' universities and companies to ensure Australia is a world leader in copper production and associated technology.
