Exposure to alcohol advertising and sponsorship in Australian televised sport: association with explicit and implicit alcohol cognitions and drinking (ARC Linkage Project administered by Monash) (2013-2017)

Abstract

Excessive alcohol consumption is problematic in Australia. The majority of the alcohol industry advertising and sponsorship is in sport, with vigorous alcohol policy debate in Australia over whether a ban on alcohol advertising and sponsorship is warranted. This project will provide important correlational and experimental evidence for this debate by examining the relationship between alcohol advertising and sponsorship in Australian TV sport, versus other TV genres, and explicit and implicit alcohol-related cognitions, drinking expectancies and drinking behaviour. The project will be the first of its kind in Australia, and the first study to examine implicit cognitions between alcohol and sport.
