Revealing the role of synaptic circular RNA-derived micropeptides in memory

Abstract

With recent advances in genome sequencing technology, it has become evident that many genes once thought to be junk DNA can generate a multitude of small proteins. However, very little is known about the source and functional relevance of these small proteins. This project will pursue the idea that a specialised molecule known as circular RNA has evolved, in part, to generate a highly efficient network of compartmentalised small proteins that act in a cell-type and state-dependent manner to control neural plasticity. Insights gained from this research may contribute to a new understanding of how the brain forms and maintains long-term memories.
