Ferroptosis: a novel regulator of neurogenesis in the adult hippocampus

Abstract

In the hippocampus of the adult brain, precursor cells divide to produce new neurons, which contribute to specific learning and memory processes. However, more than half of these cells die before they fully mature through largely unknown mechanisms. Using a combination of cell and molecular biology and animal behavioural evaluations, this project aims to determine whether these cells are eliminated by a form of cell death called ferroptosis. The outcomes of this project are expected to significantly enhance our understanding of how adult neurogenesis is regulated and define the importance of ferroptosis for this process. This should provide significant benefits for our understanding of learning and memory processes in the adult brain.
