Tracing and manipulating mobile DNA activity during brain development
Abstract
Somatic mosaicism describes variation in DNA content amongst the cells of an individual. Mobile DNA is a source of somatic mosaicism arising during mammalian brain development. However, the precise timing of when mobile DNA becomes active, and its impact on neurobiology, are largely unexplored. This project will use cutting edge approaches in genomics and genetic engineering to 1) identify brain cell lineages supporting mobile DNA activity, 2) establish its developmental timing and scope, and 3) test whether this phenomenon influences learning or behaviour. These experiments will advance understanding of how the brain develops, spur international collaboration, and lead to novel methodologies in genome analysis and biotechnology.
