Multifunctional composite skins for improved antenna performance in Defence platforms (2026-2027)

Abstract

This project is developing a smart skin to replace the shell of an uncrewed aircraft that does more than just protect the vehicle. The shell will include a built-in antenna for satellite navigation and materials that shield sensitive electronics from harmful electromagnetic interference. It will be strong and lightweight, designed to handle the forces experienced during flight while maintaining its smart functions. By using lightweight, multifunctional composite materials, the project aims to find the best option for combining strength, low weight, and electromagnetic performance. Material types being explored include metal-coated fabrics, conductive polymer films, and lightweight metallic meshes. These will be assessed for their ability to integrate into the aircraft structure without compromising performance. A working prototype will be built and flight-tested to demonstrate how the technology performs under real-world conditions and validate its suitability for future deployment.
