X-ray Microtomography of Membrane-Catalyst Interfacial Morphology in Anion Exchange Membrane MEAs for CO2 Electrolysis (2026)

Abstract

Anion exchange membranes with high ionic conductivity and low swelling are expected to reduce resistance in CO2 electrolysis MEAs. Yet our membrane exhibits higher operating resistance than commercial benchmarks despite superior intrinsic properties¿a paradox we attribute to insufficient swelling-driven conformity at the membrane¿catalyst interface. We will apply X-ray microtomography (MCT) to quantify membrane swelling, interfacial gap geometry, and liquid-pathway continuity across MEA assemblies at defined operational stages and under controlled hydration conditions. Outcomes will provide a mechanistic basis linking membrane swelling behaviour to interfacial transport resistance, guiding rational AEM and MEA design.
