Structural basis of choline transport throughout the brain (2027-2030)

Abstract

The brain relies on a constant nutrient supply to function properly. Choline is one such essential diet-derived nutrient: it is crucial for generating new brain cells, insulating neurons, and supporting blood vessel formation. However, it remains unclear how choline crosses the brain¿TM)s protective barrier to deliver these vital benefits. This Fellowship aims to uncover how choline moves into the brain and between its cells, and expects to generate new knowledge that will benefit our understanding of brain development and healthy brain health. The outcomes should provide fundamental insights into nutrient transport across the blood-brain barrier.
