Biomolecular optoelectronic materials and devices (2008-2011)

Abstract

The melanins are an important class of bio-macromolecule responsible for photoprotection in humans. They possess unique and technologically useful properties such as electrical and photo-conductivity and broad band optical absorption. In this proposal we aim to utilise these properties to develop a new class of bio-organic optoelectronic materials and devices. Additionally, we will build accurate and predictive structure-property relationships to aid materials design and optimisation. Hence, this project will generate important applied and fundamental outcomes new biocompatible functional materials and devices suitable for optoelectronic applications and new fundamental knowledge concerning an important biomaterial.
