Overview
Background
Pieter studied Biomedical Health Sciences and Medicine at the University of Nijmegen (The Netherlands) and obtained his medical degree in 2005. After moving to Australia in 2012, he started physician training in 2013. He trained in teaching hospitals in Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane before attaining fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2017 in the subspecialty of Endocrinology. Pieter has a special interest in endocrine hypertension and studied the role of aldosterone and aldosterone blockade in hypertension as part of his PhD at the Erasmus University Rotterdam (The Netherlands). He also has a particular interest in medical education. He joined UQ as a teaching-focused academic in 2018 and has coordinated several courses in the UQ MD Program across different years, including the new Year 2 course in the MD Design in 2024. His current role is Deputy Head Year 3 for the South Learning Community.
Pieter is also a part-time staff specialist at the Dept of Diabetes and Endocrinology in the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. His clinical interests have evolved around community-based models of care, improving health outcomes for Indigenous communities and reducing inequities in health care. He is the medical lead for the Diabetes Street Hub - a collaborative project between the Princess Alexandra Hospital and Micah Projects to improve diabetes care for people living in unstable housing which has received funding from the Queensland Department of Health to establish and further develop this community-based clinical service. In 2023, he received the Metro South Staff Award for Health Equity for his work on the Diabetes Street Hub.

Improving health care access and outcomes for people with diabetes mellitus experiencing housing instability including homelessness
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common chronic condition associated with severe consequences if not managed well. Management of DM is complex and requires a multidisciplinary approach alongside strong patient engagement and self-management skills. People experiencing homelessness and housing instability with DM are at particular risk of condition-related complications. Community-based services that address the specific care needs of this population are required. This research project supports our clinical service "Diabetes Street Hub" which is a community-based, person-centred diabetes service for people experiencing housing instability including homelessness.
The project is aimed to better understand the burden of diabetes in people facing homelessness, the impact of housing status on emergency presentations, and the care needs of and barriers to care for people from this community. The overarching project has three components:
1) a retrospective review of diabetes-related emergency presentations by people facing housing instability to identify and better understand the impact of housing and social, financial and psychological factors on acute care facility utilisation
2) a community diabetes screening program to assess the burden of diabetes in the community, including rates of undiagnosed diabetes and pre-diabetes, complication rates, and co-morbidities and other aggravating factors complicating diagnosis or management. This is a prospective study aiming to screen 300 people in a series of community screening events.
3) a qualitative study to assess the care needs and perceived barriers to care for people with diabetes who experience homelessness from the perspective of both consumers and relevant health care providers. This study will include qualtitative research methodologies such as surveys, semi-structured interviews and focus groups.
This project has received a Metro South Health Research Support Scheme Project Grant and an Australian Diabetes Society - AstraZeneca Diabetes Research Grant to help set up the study but the candidate will require to seek their own funding to cover their salary and tuition such as through a scholarship.
This project is best suited for a PhD student and for students with a relevant health professions background such as medicine, nursing or an allied health profession.
