Overview

Background

Dr Masnun Naher is a synthetic chemist specializing in metal-based molecular design, with a particular emphasis on understanding the electronic properties of compounds, electrochemistry, and catalysis. She obtained her B.Sc. (Hons) and Master's in Chemistry from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet, Bangladesh. In 2014, she began as a Lecturer at SUST. In 2018, she received the prestigious Forrest Research Foundation Scholarship package which includes the Australian Government RTP Scholarship (success rate less than 5%), enabling her to pursue a PhD at The University of Western Australia under Professor Paul Low. She completed her PhD in 2022 and is now a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Queensland.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Philosophy of Chemistry, University of Western Australia

Research interests

  • Copper complexes (catalysts) for atom transfer radical addition (ATRA)

Metal-catalysed radical chemistry approaches via atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) have emerged as an excellent technique to solve long-standing organic synthetic challenges. Research here is focused on Copper catalysed ATRA reaction to develop novel organic compounds via bulk electrosynthesis. The mechanistic pathway and intermediate species involved in the catalytic cycles are also studied using cyclic voltammetry simulations, electron paramagnetic spectroscopy and spectroelectrochemical data.

  • Molecular electronics

The overall goal of research is to design and synthesis of organic and organometallic complexes to study their electronic properties and establish their suitability for use as a molecular wire. The research is primarily concerned with molecular design, synthesis and characterisation using spectroscopic, spectroelectrochemical and computational methods. The projects work closely with collaboration to measure molecular conductance.
