Overview

Background

Juliana is a Research Fellow at The University of Queensland's Sustainable Minerals Institute, whose interdisciplinary research is dedicated to enhancing the sustainability and circularity of mineral resources supply through innovation. Juliana's current work focuses on developing sustainable, circular solutions, such as ore-sand co-production, to address the global sustainability challenges associated with sand supply and conventional mineral waste management.

With a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from Universidad del Valle in Colombia and a Master of Science and a PhD in Metallurgical Engineering from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Juliana's academic background includes a strong emphasis on extractive metallurgy and Life Cycle Assessment approaches for sustainability in mineral resources supply.

Her work experience includes co-leading applied research projects in collaboration with the mining industry in Brazil, Europe, and Australia. During her graduate studies, Juliana worked as a part-time Research Assistant in Brazil and later as a full-time Research Assistant at Imperial College London on the Horizon 2020 IMPaCT project from 2019 to 2020. She remains affiliated with the institution as an Honorary Research Associate.

Research impacts

Juliana has co-authored more than 30 publications in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, including journal articles, conference papers, research reports, and other publications. Her research increasingly generates an impact on mineral processing, sustainability in mining and Life Cycle Assessment (h-index 10 in Google Scholar). She has a strong network of collaborative research, having published research works with more than 50 co-authors from outstanding institutions such as The University of Queensland, University of Exeter, Imperial College London, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, University of Sao Paulo, French Geological Survey (BRGM), among others.

Juliana is eager to continue applying and expanding her knowledge in mineral processing, construction materials, and development minerals, and holistic approaches based on Life Cycle Thinking to support the sustainable circular economy transition in mining through innovation. Juliana contributes to the research community as a peer-reviewer for ten international journals (Nature Communications, Journal of Industrial Ecology, Minerals Engineering, Journal of Cleaner Production, Sustainability, Minerals, Applied Sciences, Journal of Sustainable Mining, Mining, Waste and Biomass Valorization). She is an Editorial Board Member of Geoenergy, a new co-owned journal of the Geological Society and the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE). She is also a Topical Advisory Panel member of MDPI’s Minerals journal. Also, as part of her volunteering roles, she has been appointed as a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Responsible Resource Use (2023-2024).
