Qualifications

  • Masters (Coursework) of Environmental Management, The University of Queensland
  • Doctor of Philosophy of Environmental Science, Griffith University

Research interests

  • Nutrient biogeochemistry in water, sediment and soil

Dr. Huang specializes in environmental and analytical chemistry, focusing on passive sampling techniques to monitor nutrients and heavy metals in water, sediment, and soil. She received her PhD from Griffith University in 2016 and has held fellowship positions at several universities from 2017 to 2024. Currently, she is a postdoctoral research fellow in soil science at the University of Queensland and recently received a DECRA fellowship for a project on land-based nutrients affecting Australian estuaries.

Research impacts

My DECRA project aims to investigate a previously unidentified driver of declining water quality in Australian rivers and estuaries: organic and particulate nutrients. This research will apply innovative approaches, combining chemical characterization, ecosystem response measurements, and machine learning, to unravel the complex behaviour of particulate matter as a significant source of bioavailable nutrients impacting waterways. The findings will improve water quality models and guide better catchment management strategies. The anticipated benefits include cleaner water, healthier estuarine ecosystems, stronger fishing and tourism industries, and the protection of vital areas like the Great Barrier Reef.
