Overview

Background

Mayra is a geometallurgy specialist with extensive experience leading geometallurgical studies and developing predictive models for greenfield and brownfield mining projects. She has a strong background in process mineralogy, the design and management of metallurgical testwork programs, and process design, supporting process optimisation and project development.

Her experience includes working as a Senior Metallurgist at Transmin Metallurgical Consultants in Lima, Peru. She recently completed her PhD in Mineral Processing at The University of Queensland, where her research focused on understanding the effect of mineral textures on flotation performance. She is currently a researcher with the Flotation Chemistry Group at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC), working on ore characterisation, process mineralogy, metallurgical testing, and flotation chemistry

Research impacts

My research investigates which mineral characteristics, such as texture, composition, and associations, most influence how effectively minerals can be separated and recovered through flotation. I aim to understand not just what affects flotation, but also how and why these mineralogical factors impact processing efficiency.

This work supports more efficient mineral extraction by linking measurable ore characteristics (including mineral texture, grain size, and surface chemistry) with flotation performance. These insights contribute to better geometallurgical models, improved resource predictability, and reduced operational risk in both greenfield and brownfield mining projects.

By combining advanced mineral characterisation techniques with metallurgical testing and process modelling, my research promotes more sustainable and cost-effective mineral processing. This is especially important as the industry faces increasing ore complexity, declining grades, and greater environmental and water-use pressures.

Ultimately, this research helps unlock value from difficult-to-process ores and supports decision-making across the value chain, from exploration and resource evaluation to plant design and optimisation.
