Equity and Diversity in the Australian Architecture Profession: Women, Work, and Leadership (2011-2014)

Abstract

Women are vastly under-represented in senior management in the Australian architectural profession. This is despite gender balance among graduates being close to parity. A very high proportion of women graduates leave the profession before reaching senior positions, a phenomenon which has been insufficiently understood. The project will redress this gap in knowledge and in practice, by producing the most comprehensive picture yet of women and architectural work in Australia, seeking to understand and rectify women architects' absence from leadership roles, and defining practical ways in which female (and male) architects can better balance their professional and personal lives.
