Self-mixing sensors based on terahertz quantum cascade lasers: a new technology for tissue characterisation (2012-2014)
Abstract
This project will develop new imaging technologies and systems using Terahertz Quantum Cascade Lasers (TQCLs) for applications in biomedical engineering, primarily for imaging of skin cancers and measurement of skin hydration for pharmaceutical research. Over the past decade the TQCL has emerged as a promising high power semiconductor source of THz radiation that is well-suited to compact sensing systems. We have developed a novel sensing and imaging technology using the self-mixing effect in TQCLs that will afford significant advantages in size, cost and resolution leading to broader application of the technology in areas such as security, industrial and other biomedical areas.
