Vector magnetic field facility for nanoscale spintronic materials and device research (ARC LIEF Administered by University of New South Wales) (2008)

Abstract

With the end in sight for continued miniaturisation of electronic devices, research is now focussing on utilising other properties of the electron to add new functionalities. Spintronic (spin-electronic) devices use the magnetic 'spin' of an electron rather than its charge to represent and process information. Leading edge spintronic device research requires the ability to study how the electrical properties respond to the strength and orientation of externally applied magnetic fields. This facility will generate independent magnetic fields in all three spatial dimensions (a capability that does not exist in Australia), stimulating new Australian research in spintronic materias and devices.
