Structure and function of human zinc transporter membrane proteins (2016)
Abstract
We have built new capacity into an established ARC-funded pipeline linking gene expression, structural biology, biophysics and cell biology, by embracing innovative membrane protein screening technology. We have purified monodisperse human zinc transporters and will create fundamental new knowledge on how these important mammalian membrane proteins operate. Membrane proteins are key drug targets and are significantly under-represented in structural databases. Importantly, the research outcomes will elucidate specific molecular mechanisms underpinning the essential biological process of zinc homeostasis.
