Dynamics of forgiveness and self-forgiveness (ARC Discovery Project administered by Flinders University) (2019-2022)

Abstract

This project aims to study the dynamics between forgiveness and self-forgiveness following hurt and wrongdoing in interpersonal relationships. Prior research has focused on individuals¿ traits, cognition and affect as determinants of forgiveness and self-forgiveness. This project seeks to break new ground, studying dyadic-level dynamics between both parties: interdependencies between forgiveness and self-forgiveness in a dialogical process of moral repair. The expected outcome is an advanced understanding of the psychology of moral repair and the restoration of relationships following wrongdoing. This will aid couple and work relationships, inform counselling and grievance procedures, and benefit individuals¿ well-being at home and at work.
