A cyclic ion-mobility mass spectrometer for resolving molecular isomers (ARC LIEF application led by Queensland University of Technology) (2022)

Abstract

Both our fundamental understanding of the natural world and our ability to shape new functional materials depends on our ability to assign molecular structure. Rapid assignment of molecular structures within complex biological or synthetic mixtures and, particularly, the differentiation between closely related structures (i.e., isomers) is a frontier challenge for chemists and biologists alike. The requested infrastructure directly addresses this challenge by making next-generation (cyclic) ion-mobility mass spectrometry available to Australian researchers for the first time. This new capability will drive biomolecular discovery across both plant and animal kingdoms, and accelerate advances in materials science.
