Iron-Catalysed Electrochemically-Enabled Amination Reactions

Abstract

Homogeneous metal electrocatalysis has become a prominent strategy for the formation of bonds difficult to make using conventional methods. Most approaches based on earth-abundant metals use nickel or cobalt compounds, which are becoming problematic due to health and supply concerns. This project aims to discover novel electrochemical methods for the formation of carbon-nitrogen bonds based on iron electrocatalysts, a very attractive element due to its low cost, wide availability and low toxicity. Expected outcomes of this project include a better understanding of the reactivity of electrogenerated iron complexes and their application in synthesis. Benefits of these outcomes include new green protocols for the synthesis of organic compounds
