Operando study of iron plating/stripping on carbon electrode for high performance acidic all iron flow batteries (2026)

Abstract

Acidic all-iron aqueous redox flow batteries have emerged as a standout for energy storage systems due to their safety and cost-effectiveness. However, hydrogen evolution and undesirable dendrite growth causes major constraints to the advancement of this flow battery. Herein, a weakly solvating electrolyte is formed by adopting butanone with a low Gutmann donor number and a low dielectric constant. Powder diffraction plays a vital role in clarifying structural evolution and offering an in-depth insight into the mechanism of iron plating/ stripping. Furthermore, equipped with our customised in-situ flow cell, the screening of reversibility of iron metal will be achieved.
