Fuelling the Brain: Neuronal Fatty Acid Metabolism in Energy and Cognition (2027-2030)

Abstract

The brain needs vast energy to think, learn and remember. The prevailing view is that neurons derive energy solely from dietary sugars. A recent breakthrough by the applicant has challenged this long-held view, revealing that endogenous fats play a critical role in powering neurons. Using advanced imaging and multiomics, this project aims to reveal the mechanisms underlying this uncharacterised pathway, specifically the role of lipid enzyme Ddhd2, and how it supports neuronal function, integrates with other brain energy systems, and changes with ageing. This is expected to establish a transformative conceptual framework for brain energy metabolism, guiding innovative strategies to support brain health and deliver wide-ranging benefits.
