Role of magnetic resonance imaging in monitoring hepatic steatosis and visceral adiposity during treatment. (2004-2006)

Abstract

Visceral adiposity and liver fat are recognised as important cofactors in the development and progression of liver injury and fibrosis. As a consequence, there is increasing interest in the role of weight loss and a reduction in liver fat in the treatment of chronic liver disease. In order to assess the benefits of treatment, an accurate, non-invasive method of quantifying hepatitic steatosis is necessary. This study will determine the role of Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) in the assessment and serial monitoring of fatty liver without any radiation risk or invasive procedures such as liver biopsy.
