Research impacts

Dr. Yongping Wei is a professor at the School of the Environment, the University of Queensland (since 2020). Before joining the University of Queensland in 2016, she was a research fellow, senior research fellow, and principal research fellow at the Department of Infrastructure Engineering, the University of Melbourne. Dr Wei was awarded her PhD in Natural Resources Management at the University of Melbourne in 2007.

Dr Wei is a founder of socio-hydrology. Her research contributes to revealing interactive processes between humans and nature by developing quantitative sociology and integrating it into natural cycles to improve the suitability, preciseness, and predictability of environmental decision-making. Her research areas cover water and land resources, agriculture, terrestrial vegetation ecosystem and global environmental change.

Dr Wei’s research has been recognized by the ARC with the awards of a Post-Doctoral Fellowship (2010-2013) and a Future Fellowship (2015-2019), and four ARC research projects cross DP, LP, and SRI programs as the first CI. In addition, she is appointed to the ARC College of Experts (2022-2024).

Dr Wei has been awarded over 40 grants of $10 million as the sole CI, first CI and/or project coordinator, including the establishment and development of the Australia and China Joint Research Centre on River Basin Management, an initiative jointly funded by Australian and Chinese governments.

Dr Wei has published one book, four book chapters, and about 200 journal papers over fifteen years since she was granted her PhD degree. Major journals where she has published her work include Nature Sustainability, Science Advance, Global Environmental Change, Water Resources Research, Hydrology and Earth Science Sciences, Agriculture, Ecosystems & Environment; Water Resources Management, AMBIO, Environmental Science and Policy, and Ecosystem Services.
