Overview
Background
Joseph's (Joe) research focuses on the characterisation and commercialisation of Australian native plants, particularly for applications in food, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, and material science. He is especially interested in the bioactive properties of polyphenols and other phytochemicals/secondary metabolites found in traditionally used species, and how these compounds can be validated and applied in modern health, wellbeing, and biomaterial applications.
An expert in food metabolomics, Joseph employs advanced metabolomics platforms, particularly liquid chromatography coupled with time-of-flight and tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ToF-MS/MS), to comprehensively profile the complex chemical makeup of native plant species. He uses multivariate data analysis and chemometric modelling to correlate bioactivity and functional outcomes with specific compound profiles. This integrative approach allows for the identification of key bioactive markers and supports the development of high-value products derived from native flora, grounded in both traditional knowledge and cutting-edge analytical science.
Alongside his academic work, Joseph has collaborated with a range of industry partners across Australia and internationally, including companies in the cosmetics, personal care, and health and wellness sectors. His experience spans product development, extract standardisation, and the translation of scientific data into evidence-based formulation and design strategies. This applied perspective supports his ability to link laboratory findings with commercial and environmental relevance. His work contributes to safety assessments, quality assurance, and the development of ethical, traceable supply chains. He is particularly committed to ensuring that Traditional Knowledge is recognised, protected, and appropriately integrated into industry frameworks.

Australian native foods and plant bioactives
Research focused on the phytochemistry, nutritional composition and functional properties of Australian native foods and plants. This work characterises phenolic compounds, anthocyanins, volatile metabolites and other bioactive constituents, with particular interest in under-researched native fruits, herbs and plant species and their potential applications as foods, ingredients and value-added products.
-
Food metabolomics and foodomics
Application of metabolomics, volatilomics and foodomics approaches to characterise complex food and plant systems. Research uses LC–MS, GC–MS, spectroscopy and multivariate data analysis to identify chemical markers, differentiate species and varieties, investigate processing-induced changes and connect chemical composition with functional, sensory and product-quality attributes.
-
Indigenous food systems and community-led research
Research undertaken in collaboration with Indigenous communities to investigate native foods, plants and culturally significant species while supporting community priorities, Indigenous knowledge systems and benefit sharing. This work includes culturally informed research governance, Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property considerations, ethical commercialisation and the integration of Indigenous knowledge with contemporary food, agricultural and analytical sciences.
-
Green extraction and sustainable food processing
Development and optimisation of sustainable processing technologies for recovering and stabilising bioactive compounds from plant materials and food-processing streams. Research interests include microwave hydrodiffusion and gravity, ultrasound-assisted extraction, solvent-reduced extraction and microencapsulation, with emphasis on understanding how processing conditions influence phytochemical recovery, stability, functionality and product quality.
-
Functional foods and ingredients
Research into the development and characterisation of functional foods, nutraceutical ingredients and plant-derived extracts with potential health and food-industry applications. This includes evaluating antioxidant, antimicrobial and other functional properties, identifying bioactive chemical constituents and investigating approaches for translating underutilised Australian plant resources into safe, stable and scientifically substantiated ingredients.
-
Chemometrics and process analytical technologies
Application of chemometrics and process analytical technologies to understand, monitor and optimise food, plant and agricultural systems. Research integrates multivariate data analysis with spectroscopic and analytical platforms, including NIR, LC–MS and GC–MS, to identify chemical patterns, develop predictive models, assess product quality and enable rapid, non-destructive measurement for laboratory, processing and field-based applications.
-
Cultural fire, agricultural landscapes and plant resilience
Research examining relationships between cultural burning, plant systems, food resources and agricultural landscape resilience. This work combines community-led field research with chemical analysis, metabolomics and portable spectroscopy to investigate how fire management influences plant composition, ecological resources and opportunities for resilient and culturally informed agricultural systems.
Research impacts
Joseph’s research on Australian native plants is making a tangible impact across the food, health, and cosmetic industries. By combining advanced analytical science with on-the-ground collaboration, his work helps to unlock the value of traditional plant knowledge in modern, culturally respectful ways.
Supporting Indigenous-Led Enterprise Joseph works closely with Traditional Custodians to ensure that local knowledge and community values are respected and integrated into research and development. His place-based approach fosters trust and contributes to ethical, traceable supply chains that recognise the custodianship of Country.
Driving Innovation in Natural Products Joseph’s research has contributed to the development of:
-
Nutraceuticals with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties
-
Cosmetics rich in polyphenols from native plants
-
Biodegradable materials enriched with polyphenols from native plants
These innovations support cleaner, greener product development and reduce reliance on synthetic ingredients.
