Overview

Background

Dr. Jiaxi Yong is currently a postdoc research fellow in School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences (SCMB), the University of Queensland (UQ).

Dr. Yong's research interests are in the field of nano-agro-biotechnology, specifically, nanoparticle-based nucleic acid delivery system, and plant-nanoparticle interactions. His current work is focusing on investigating the uptake and translocation of nanoparticles in plants, with the overarching aim to deliver synthetic RNAs and plasmid into various of plants, from model plants Arabidopsis to horticultural plants and grains including tobacco, tomato, citrus wheat, sorghum, and canola. He is also expertise in fluorescence-based imaging and tracking in plant and mammalian cells and tissues.

Dr. Yong obtained his PhD from Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN, UQ) in May 2023. He worked with Dr. Chris Brosnan and Prof. Neena Mitter in the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI, UQ) from May 2023 to July 2025, and then with Prof. Bernard Carroll in SCMB, UQ from July 2025.

    Nanoparticle-based DNA and RNA delivery to intact plants for plant trait regulation and gene editing

  • Fluorescence-based imaging

    Fluorescence-based staining, imaging, detection and tracking of ROS, nanoparticles, protein, tissue and cells.

Research impacts

Dr. Yong has published 25 journal articles, eight (32%) of these works are in top 10% most cited publications worldwide, including one highly cited paper (top 1%). Dr. Yong has published six articles as the first author in the world-leading journals including Nature Plants, Plant Physiology and Trends in Genetics. These publications attracted more than 1000 citations with an H-index of 20.

Dr Yong is also an inventor of a PCT patent (WO/2024/243627) associated with protein-coated nanoparticle delivery platform.
