Overview

Background

Kristina Knox is a Teaching Associate at The University of Queensland with over ten years of professional experience in architectural practice and a strong focus on contemporary design education. She coordinates and develops curriculum for a number of courses in architecture, building technology and design, and teaches across multiple disciplines in the School of Architecture, Design and Planning. Her teaching emphasises structural literacy, generative and computational design, and the development of clear, creative modes of architectural communication for emerging designers.

Kristina’s work spans architectural pedagogy, generative and parametric design, and interactive and responsive spatial environments. Her creative research includes projects such as in.bloom (UQ, 2019), an interactive robotic installation supported by a UQ Life Grant, and Urban Totems (Botanica Festival, 2022), funded by Brisbane City Council and the Museum of Brisbane. She is also the recipient of a UQ Strategic Library Grant supporting the development of a forthcoming textbook.

She has published widely and presented her work at numerous conferences, contributing to ongoing conversations around digital design methods and experimental practice. Kristina is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and is currently focused on advancing teaching innovation within architectural curriculum design and delivery.

Research interests

  • Computational, generative and parametric design

I investigate how computational, generative and parametric design methods can expand architectural form-finding and support more responsive design processes. My work uses algorithmic and parametric modelling to explore the relationship between digital design logic, spatial experience and fabrication. I am also interested in how design computation can be introduced effectively in architectural education, giving students early confidence with digital design tools and parametric approach.

  • Interactive architecture and responsive environments

My research examines how interactive and responsive spaces influence human behaviour and social interaction, from the scale of an installation to the smart city. I have presented this work at CAADRIA and at international scientific forums. I have also tested it through public interactive installations, such as in.bloom at UQ

  • Design pitching and assessment in design education

I research the design pitch as a form of learning and knowing in design education, treating it as an epistemic device rather than only a presentation skill. Drawing on my involvement with design courses, this work informs assessment design, industry-engaged learning and feedback practices. It contributes to the scholarship of teaching and learning in design disciplines.

  • Hands-on learning

I develop experiential approaches to teaching structures, materials and design communication to first-year architecture students, including material observation, prototyping and destructive testing. This work underpins my forthcoming book on the foundations of architectural design and communication, supported by a UQ Library grant. As a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, I connect classroom innovation with evidence-informed teaching practice.
