Overview
Background
Dr Christoph Nedopil is a UQ Business School Professor, a Visiting Professor at FISF Fudan University, Shanghai, and a Professorial Research Associate at SOAS University of London.
Christoph’s work focuses on green industry transitions in the Asia-Pacific region. He regularly provides advisory services and capacity building to governments, financial institutions, enterprises, and civil society on green finance, corporate governance and transition leadership.
He is the lead author of the UNDP SDG Finance Taxonomy, the Innovative Climate Finance Solutions report for the G20 in Indonesia, and the Green Development Guidance of the BRI Green Development Coalition under the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment. He has further authored four books with translations in several languages and published articles in Science and other leading academic journals. Christoph is quoted regularly in Financial Times, The Economist, Reuters, Bloomberg, and other major outlets.
Before joining UQ, he served as Director of the Griffith Asia Institute at Griffith University, as the Founding Director of the Green Finance & Development Center and Associate Professor at the Fudan International School of Finance (FISF), Fudan University and previously as Founding Director for the Green BRI Center at the Central University of Economics in Beijing. He also worked for more than a decade with the World Bank in over 15 countries and served as a Director at the German development agency GIZ.
Christoph holds a Master of Engineering and a PhD in Economics from the Technical University Berlin, as well as a Master of Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School.

Research impacts
Professor Christoph Nedopil’s research and policy engagement have contributed to greening finance and accelerating industry transitions.
One example is his significant contribution to greening China’s overseas finance, strengthening the case for moving away from new overseas coal plants towards cleaner investments. As a lead author of the Green Development Guidance for BRI Projects and its implementation guidance as well as contributor to multiple studies of CCICED, he helped develop practical frameworks for financial institutions and developers to assess environmental risks, strengthen safeguards and prioritise green investments. His research, including work commissioned by UNDP, has informed consideration of debt-for-nature swaps to address debt sustainability alongside biodiversity and climate objectives.
Across Asia, his work has advanced financing approaches for coal phase-down, demonstrating how early retirement of Chinese-sponsored plants can preserve or increase investor value and informing discussions on retirement and repurposing. His research, advisory work and capacity-building have supported stronger green-finance governance and leadership in state-owned enterprises, emphasising transition strategies, board accountability, risk management and access to sustainable capital. Through the Green Energy Network Asia (GEN-A), he has strengthened partnerships among policymakers, utilities, financiers and researchers, connecting Asian expertise with Chinese and international stakeholders to advance practical solutions for renewable-energy investment, battery storage and the transition away from fossil fuels.
His work on heavy-industry transitions has strengthened the case for Australia–China cooperation on iron and steel decarbonisation, identifying risks to established exports and opportunities for green iron investment, technology sharing and low-emissions trade. Through his leadership of the Australia–China Iron and Steel Decarbonisation Dialogue Platform, he is supporting structured engagement between industry and research partners to address investment barriers, policy incentives and coordination challenges, helping connect Australia’s resources and renewable-energy potential with China’s industrial capabilities and markets.
