Research impacts

Associate Professor Treasure McGuire has a record of national achievement in clinical research: Lilly International Hospital Pharmacy Fellowship (1983), Sandoz Research Fellowship (1993), and Sr Eileen Pollard Medal for excellence in incorporating research into clinical care provision (Mater Research-UQ, 2015). Between 1995 and 2012, she transitioned innovative pharmacist-demonstration projects into national, medicines call centres, supporting over 200,000 consumer help-seeking events and delivering $4.5 millio funding from professional stakeholders to support these quality use of medicines activities. Her related PhD provided strategic opportunities to increase the consumer voice in health decision-making (27 peer-reviewed papers, 58 conference papers as research lead).

In 2012, her evidence-based collaborative was awarded a NHMRC-CRE grant, ‘Minimising Antibiotic Resistance for Acute Respiratory Infections’ ($2.5 million over 5 years). I led pragmatic research matching antibiotic pack size with guideline duration of use and evaluated antimicrobial stewardship interventions. Opportunities followed: TGA initiatives (removal of repeats from commonly prescribed antibiotics), 2017 HABS Faculty Research Collaboration Seeding Grant success, and seven Cochrane systematic reviews.

The quality and impact of Treasure’s work is evident through publication in international recognised outlets: over 90 peer-reviewed papers (23 as first author), 26 book chapters/e-modules, and 134 conference presentations. She has developed a growing pharmacy workforce with research skills, integral to their professional development. Whilst securing modest funding (≈$750,000) for practice-based research as primary investigator, her co-investigator grants exceed $3 million. However, Treasure’s key achievement is that her research continues to inform practice change in healthcare delivery and medicines use.
