n-of-1 trials of pilocarpine vs placebo for dry mouth in palliative care patients (2010-2012)

Abstract

Dry mouth affects 80% of patients with advanced cancer, and greatly affects their quality of life. N-of-1 trials are usually used for testing effectiveness of medicines in individual patients. We will combine a series of N-of-1 trials of pilocarpine for dry mouth in palliative care patients to test the effectiveness of pilocarpine. Using treatment proven to work for the individual patient will make a significant difference to the quality of life of these terminally ill patients.
