Gas chromatography: Separating inseparables, identifying unidentifiables (ARC LIEF grant administered by Monash University) (2018-2019)

Abstract

This facility aims to provide researchers with an integrated capability for separation, isolation, and precise structural identification of volatile compounds. It expects to deliver a systematic solution using unprecedented automated prep-scale multidimensional gas chromatographic separation, isolating pure compounds for off-line characterisation using appropriate spectroscopic tools e.g. nuclear magnetic resonance. Mass spectrometry alone is often inadequate for characterisation in separation methods, for low abundance and/or structurally similar compounds. This should provide significantly better characterisation of chemical mixtures with benefits to e.g. natural product monitoring and allergen identification and interaction with cells.
