
Overview
Background
Edgar Brea is a Lecturer in Innovation at UQ Business School, where he leads research and teaching on technology and innovation management. Edgar holds a PhD in Innovation Management from The University of Queensland, as well as a Master of Technology and Innovation Management and a Bachelor of Computer Systems Engineering. He has over 15 years of consulting and research experience providing guidance on the development and management of technological innovation across a variety of industries including banking, oil and gas, food and beverage, bioinformatics, as well as science organisations such as the CSIRO.
His research focuses on the intersection of technology, innovation, and strategic management, with particular emphasis on AI and digital technologies. He explores the implications of these technologies for knowledge creation, collective problem solving, and innovation processes in organisations and ecosystems. He aims to develop effective strategies for technology and innovation management that both unlock the potential of emerging technologies and help diverse actors innovate collaboratively in increasingly complex digital ecosystems.

• Exploring how innovation processes can be managed in organisations and ecosystems to maximise the generation of novel ideas, products, services and business models • Tracking innovation activity in organisations, ecosystems and nations, and mapping its trajectory (e.g., research topics and practical problems tackled by organisations over time)

• Investigating the development and adoption of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), to increase innovative capacity and unlock strategic value for organisations. • Examining the effects of AI on individuals' and teams' ability to generate ideas and novel solutions to problems

• Exploring the process through which knowledge is recombined among individuals and organisations • Examining collective knowledge creation processes on digital platforms (i.e., crowdsourcing platforms, online communities)

• Applying and experimenting with machine learning, network science and big data analytics methods to systematically study innovation • Developing data analytics and visualisation tools that can be adopted by organisations to support their innovation processes (e.g., new product development, R&D)
