Overview

Background

Dr Jaimon Kelly is a consultant Accredited Practising Dietitian and Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Online Health, and one of Australia's and the world's leading experts in digital and telehealth-delivered nutrition care for chronic disease.

He holds a PhD in technology-supported lifestyle interventions and leads a research program that established the international evidence standard for telehealth-delivered nutrition care. His work has changed what is recommended internationally, what is funded and practised nationally, and how equitably digital nutrition care reaches the community.

Dr Kelly led the dietetics profession's first national telehealth position statement for Dietitians Australia and the national evaluation of dietetic telehealth under Medicare, and his research has been embedded in routine care, professional guidance and health policy in Australia and internationally. He was recognised with a University of Queensland Vice-Chancellor's Award for Early Career Research Excellence and, in 2024, a UQ Foundation for Research Excellence Award for promoting telehealth equity and innovation.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research sits at the intersection of nutrition, health service delivery and digital health, and asks how technology can make high-quality, patient-centred nutrition care both effective and equitable for people living with complex chronic conditions.

My interests are in 1) Nutrition and dietetics, primarily diet quality and methods to improve it in people with chronic kidney disease and other complex chronic conditions; 2) Health service delivery, focused on models of care that move evidence into routine practice and funding; and 3) Digital health, specifically preparing the workforce, co-designing and testing technology-assisted lifestyle interventions, and building digital health trust, literacy and equity of access. A consistent thread across this work is simplifying nutrition communication for clinicians and for people living with chronic conditions, so that digital nutrition care reaches everyone, including culturally and linguistically diverse communities and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Research impacts

Dr Kelly's research established the international evidence standard for telehealth-delivered nutrition care. His seminal systematic review and meta-analysis of telehealth-delivered dietary interventions in chronic disease became one of the systematic reviews underpinning the United States Community Preventive Services Task Force recommendation that comprehensive telehealth interventions be used to improve diet in adults with chronic disease. That recommendation is disseminated nationally through the US Community Guide, Healthy People 2030 and CDC chronic-disease and diabetes resources, placing his synthesis at the centre of US national prevention guidance. The same body of work has informed OECD health working papers, and has attracted 17 invited editorials and commentaries on these topics and best-paper awards in the Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare.

He separately conceived and led the first multinational meta-analysis of modifiable lifestyle factors for chronic kidney disease prevention, drawing on 104 studies and more than 2.7 million participants. This established the first evidence base for lifestyle-based primary prevention of chronic kidney disease and is cited in the 2024 KDIGO Clinical Practice Guideline, where his analyses underpin its dietary recommendations.

His recent work extends this impact to equity and access. He has led national work improving telehealth access for culturally and linguistically diverse communities, senior-authored and mentored the development of an Indigenous strengths-based framework for nutrition and wellbeing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with kidney disease, and contributed to virtual emergency department models that reduce unnecessary presentations.

  • Improving digital health literacy in chronic disease management

    This PhD program will determine and improve the digital health literacy of patients and the health professional workforce working in chronic diseases in tertiary centres in Queensland. This will involve the design and validation of a digital health literacy instrument for these populations, and an Australian first evaluation of digital health literacy of the chronic condition demographic which can guide decision makers and program implementers moving forward.

    This PhD will culminate in the development and pilot implementation of evidence-based and end-user-centred training and education materials, in the health service, to improve the delivery of effective, safe, and quality virtual care chronic condition services.
