Dr Joe Gattas is as an Associate Professor at the University of Queensland's School of Civil Engineering, where he heads the Folded Structures research group. His research expertise spans various fields, including origami-inspired engineering, computational building design, advanced manufacturing, lightweight and modular structures, and timber engineering. In 2009, Joe obtained his Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Queensland, and in 2013, he completed his Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford, funded by a prestigious John Monash Scholarship. He remains an active participant in the John Monash Scholar community.

From 2016 to 2021, Joe led the Manufacture and Digital Design project stream within the ARC Future Timber Hub. This initiative aimed to support the development of tall timber buildings in the Pacific region. Upon its successful completion, timber industry partners backed the establishment of a new ARC Advance Timber Hub (2022-), designed to accelerate innovation and the adoption of timber in Australian buildings. Joe currently serves as Co-Lead for two research nodes within the new Hub: 1) Manufacturing Innovation, which encompasses projects focusing on the digital design and fabrication of innovative structures and systems; and 2) Value Chain Innovation, which covers projects dedicated to enhancing resource utilization throughout the forest-to-building timber value chain.

Badin is an environmental engineer with over 20 years’ experience in environmental hydrology and water resource engineering. In his current role with the University of Queensland’s School of Civil Engineering he leads a program of research that aims to support the sustainable management of water resources and aquatic ecosystems. This research seeks to quantify water flows and the associated transport of sediment and contaminants in environmental systems ranging from upland rivers and streams to lakes, estuaries and the near-coastal ocean as well as their connected groundwater systems. Badin employs a multi-disciplinary approach that combines the application of innovative environmental monitoring with a range of models to better understand how different factors influence water quality and ecosystem health in these systems.

Prior to joining the University of Queensland, Badin was active in engineering and environmental management roles within various local government, state government, not-for-profit and professional engineering consulting organisations. He applies this past industry experience in his current research activities, which are characterised by close collaboration with water management agencies, to deliver scientific information to support management decisions.

Badin also maintains an active involvement in the University of Queensland’s undergraduate and post-graduate teaching programs where he delivers lectures in various subjects including environmental engineering, hydrology, environmental risk assessment and modelling of surface water and groundwater systems. The experience gained in these roles enables him to communicate complex environmental information with a level of detail appropriate to a range of different audiences from community stakeholders to the engineering profession and regulatory agencies. Badin also supervises a number of post-graduate and undergraduate students who are pursuing research in the area of environmental hydrology and contaminant transport, with many focusing on the implications of forecast climate shifts on water resource management decisions.

Xiaolin is a Lecturer in Civil Engineering at The University of Queensland. Her research focuses on transport modelling, predictive analytics, and the integration of emerging vehicle technologies into urban mobility.

Her current research examines autonomous modular vehicles and the design of integrated transport systems. She develops modelling and optimisation methods for door-to-door feeder services connected to high-capacity modular transit corridors, with the aim of improving transport efficiency, accessibility, sustainability and equity.

Before joining UQ, Xiaolin was a Postdoctoral Associate at the Center for Interacting Urban Networks at New York University Abu Dhabi. She received her PhD in Transport Modelling from the University of Sydney and holds a Master’s degree in Transportation Systems from the Technical University of Munich.

Xiaolin also has industry experience at the BMW AG Research and Innovation Centre in Munich. She has published in leading transport journals, including Transportation Research Part B and Transportation Research Part E, and serves as a reviewer for Transportation Letters, Transportmetrica A and Transportmetrica B.

Rebecca Gravina is Professor and TMR Chair of Structural Engineering at the University of Queensland in Brisbane. The TMR Chair position is endowed by the Queensland Government Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). Rebecca also held the position of Professor in Civil and Infrastructure Engineering at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. She obtained her PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of Adelaide and prior to joining academia, worked as a consulting Structural Engineer with ARUP. Professor Gravina is an established researcher with over 25 years of experience in academia and consulting engineering. Her research field concerns the long-term performance and durability of reinforced concrete (RC) and prestressed concrete (PC) structures, sustainability of infrastructure, rehabilitation of existing structures with Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRP), multi-functional self-healing cementitious composites, recycled materials in concrete, and engineering education. Professor Gravina is the co-author of the textbook 'Prestressed Concrete' by Warner, Foster and Gravina, she has published more than 100 research papers, has won numerous competitive research grants valued over $6 Million and teaching awards. Professor Gravina is the Editor in Chief of the Australian Journal of Civil Engineering, Immediate President of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Australian Section, Executive Committee Member of the International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC), and Member of the Concrete Institute of Australia. Her research is well recognised by industry, and she continuously collaborates with civil infrastructure companies and agencies to support innovation and technology transfer.

Monitoring and understanding of greenhouse gas emissions and sediment dynamics in shallow water bodies.

My primary interests are in monitoring and understanding biogeochemical processes within shallow water ecosystems. My formal training was in biochemistry and marine biology focusing on Southern Ocean food webs. Subsequently, I have focused on monitoring sediment loading and greenhouse gas emissions from sub-tropical coastal and freshwater systems.

I joined the School of Civil Engineering in 2007 to work in the area of sediment biogeochemical cycling in freshwater storages and coastal lagoons. In order to better understand these processes it is critical to monitor overlying water column processes as well as catchment interactions. Therefore, my primary research activities have been in the developing novel monitoring systems of catchments and their receiving water bodies.

Harnessing the power of AI and mixed reality to transform civil engineering: enhancing design accuracy, streamlining workflows, and fostering innovation.

Dr Johnny Ho joined School of Civil Engineering, The University of Queensland (UQ) in Sep 2013 as a Senior Lecturer. Before joining UQ, Dr Ho has been working in both Hong Kong and Brisbane offices of Arup from 2003 to 2007 on some large-scale infrastructure projects such as The Stonecutters Bridge in Hong Kong and Ipswich Motorway Upgrade (Wacol to Darra) in Queensland, Australia. In Sep 2007, he joined the Department of Civil Engineering, The University of Hong Kong as an Assistant Professor. Dr Ho’s research interests are on scientific study on dilatancy of High-flowability and -performance concrete due to poly-carboxylate based superplasticizers and its application to concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) and FRP-confined concrete structures. He has developed discrete element modelling of binary packing of 2D discs and 3D spheres using Python and Swift coding. This model, combined with the rheological model of superplasticized concrete, will contribute a more scientific concrete mix design method for low-carbon-footprint, low cost and high-performance concrete (HPC) based on wet packing modelling of particles in the fresh concrete with incorporation of multi-sized fillers. Dr Ho is also interested in applying the low-carbon-footprint high-performance concrete to single- and double-skinned concrete-filled-steel-tube and FRP-confined columns with external steel confinement and/or internal concrete expansive agent.

Dr Ho has published over 100 SCI journal papers and 40 conference papers. Two of his journal papers have been awarded the Transactions Prizes in respectively 2004 and 2005 presented by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. In 2011, Dr Ho was awarded the Best Presenter in the 11th International Conference on Concrete Engineering and Technology in Malaysia. In 2010, one of his students was awarded The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers Outstanding Paper Award for Young Engineers/Researchers. Dr Ho has also been very successful in obtaining research and teaching grants, including a HK$1.2m General Research Fund (GRF) grant in Hong Kong in 2010, an A$286K ARC Discovery Project (DP) grant in 2015, two National Science Foundation (NSF) Grant in 2020 and 2022 of grants CNY$600K and $5m in PRC. Dr Ho has also been very successful in supervision of undergraduate student in performing their final year projects/thesis. In 2012 and 2013, two of his Final Year Project students were given the Merit Awards of the ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) Hong Kong Graduates and Students Papers Competition for the outstanding project work. In 2017, his thesis project student were awarded The HKIE Outstanding Paper Award for Young Engineers/Researchers by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and was awarded HKD$5,000 cash prize and a return ticket to and accommodation in Hong Kong for presenting his awarded paper.

Dr Ho is a passionate teacher and one of the most popular lecturers amongst the students. He is responsible for teaching a broad range of structural engineering courses, which consist of Reinforced concrete design as per EC2, AS3600 and Hong Kong Code, Prestressed concrete design as per EC2 and AS3600, Structural analysis, Finite element method, Design of steel structures as per AS4100, Structural fire engineering. Dr Ho obtained very high teaching (92%) and course (85%) evaluation scores in every semester since 2013 and was awarded the "Most Effective Teacher by Dean’s Commendation Students" in the Faculty of EAIT, UQ, in 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Lately, Dr Ho's research focus has been on applying technologies on the structural analysis, experimental simulation and AI-enhanced parallel computing modelling of particle packing in concrete. A preliminary version of iStruct2D has been developed, which is a drag and drop version of structural analysis software developed mainly for undergraduate students' learning. A mixed reality virtual experimental platform for structural engineering education and research is undergoing through the use of Apple Vision Pro.

Dr Jurij Karlovšek is a recognised expert in Geotechnical and Underground Engineering, known for driving innovation through research, fostering industry collaboration, and mentoring the next generation of engineers. His work bridges technical excellence with strategic leadership across academia and industry, positioning him as a key contributor to infrastructure transformation.

He leads multidisciplinary research and teaching initiatives with deep expertise across three core domains. In the area of infrastructure innovation, Dr Karlovšek is at the forefront of sustainable infrastructure development and geotechnical resilience, contributing to the advancement of resilient urban systems and underground space utilisation. He brings specialist knowledge in tunnelling and constructability, particularly in the design and delivery of large-scale underground infrastructure projects.

In digital engineering and information modelling, he is internationally recognised for his pioneering contributions to Building Information Modelling (BIM) in tunnelling, with a strong focus on bored and mechanised tunnelling methods. His research advances the integration of digital workflows, sustainability principles, and life-cycle asset management, positioning him as a thought leader in the digitalisation of infrastructure systems.

In the field of advanced non-destructive and spatial technologies, Dr Karlovšek applies cutting-edge non-destructive testing (NDT) and spatial analysis techniques to evaluate infrastructure integrity and subsurface conditions. He leverages technologies such as Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), SLAM, LiDAR, and InSAR to support precise monitoring, localisation, and long-term performance assessment of critical assets.

Dr Karlovsek is an EAIT Faculty Lead and Director at the Sustainable Infrastructure Research Hub, collaborating closely with the BEL Faculty. Additionally, he is the co-founder and area lead at the Infrastructure CoLab.

Dr Danish Kazmi completed his PhD in Geotechnical Engineering at The University of Queensland (UQ) in Australia. His PhD research investigated the potential use of crushed waste glass as a sustainable alternative to depleting traditional construction sands (both natural and quarried) to backfill granular columns for in-situ ground improvement. He is a global pioneer in researching the potential use of crushed waste glass to backfill granular columns for ground improvement in clayey soil.

His research primarily focuses on developing sustainable geomaterials by recycling ever-increasing wastes as alternatives to diminishing and increasingly expensive natural aggregates in geotechnical construction, helping the transition to a circular economy.

Danish is a TEDx Speaker and delivered a TEDx Talk at TEDxBrisbane. He is also one of the youngest researchers ever from his centre at UQ to receive a PhD.

Danish won the prestigious Career Development Fellowship at UQ, funded by the Australian Government. He received the coveted UQ Global Change Scholar Award. He won the Young Science Ambassador Award for the Wonder of Science Program in Australia to help promote a STEM culture in Queensland schools. He is a passionate science communicator and a double award winner at the Three Minute Thesis Competition (3MT®) at UQ’s School of Civil Engineering. His PhD research has been featured in several Australian and international magazines and has led him to win several scholarships, alongside his selection to present at well-reputed live science communication events. Danish has published three high-definition UQ-branded Video Abstracts to communicate his research to the broader society and help maximise science outreach. Danish was interviewed by Inspiring Australia as part of Australia's National Science Week celebrations to help spark the interest of students in STEM education. He has successfully initiated cross-institutional research collaborations with world-leading organisations and is an invited peer reviewer for various top-ranking scientific journals and conferences.

Danish currently works as a full-time Senior Adviser - Marine Strategic Planning at Redland City Council in Queensland Local Government. Before this role, he worked as a full-time Geotechnical Engineer in the Tunnels & Geotechnical Team (South Queensland Region) at GHD for over 2 years in the Australian industry. Previously, he worked as a full-time Lecturer in Geotechnical Engineering at UQ.

Throughout his work experience in both the Australian industry and academia (university), Danish has developed a wide-ranging skill set in civil geotechnical engineering, strategic asset planning and management, and leadership, enriched by experiences gained across the Australian public and private sectors. He is passionate about developing transformative civil and geotechnical engineering solutions through leading-edge research, leveraging university-industry collaborations.

My research focuses on reef recovery following disturbances, looking at the interplay between biological, ecological and physical drivers of recovery. After diving in the Galapagos, my interest in the marine environment was piqued, and I began a PhD in reef recovery dynamics in 2016, receiving my doctarate in 2021. My work is interdisplinary, incorporating aspects of marine geology and hydrodynamics to the core focus of marine ecology. I have investigated how coral recruitment is affected by material legacies (rubble) on coral reefs, how these legacies are affected by the physical environment (mobilisation thesholds) and how marine invertebrates consolidate this material, contributing to reef recovery. My research focuses largely on natural recovery potential, but I also investigate the efficacy of reef restoration techniques in the marine environment, such as mesh netting and metal structures, and where they can speed recovery. My work has spanned multiple regions, including the Maldives, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Coral Triangle.

Jiwon Kim is an Associate Professor in Transport Engineering and the Director of Higher Degree by Research in the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Queensland. She was a DECRA Fellow (2019-2022) sponsored by the Australian Research Council. She joined UQ in 2014 after completing her PhD research at Northwestern University. Prior to joining Northwestern, she worked at Samsung C&T (Engineering & Construction Group). She received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in civil engineering from Korea University.

Her research interests broadly encompass the application of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) to enhance prediction, automation, and insight generation in transportation and urban mobility. She is passionate about developing intelligent autonomous systems that facilitate real-time traffic management and control, mobility service optimization, and traveller support. Her current research explores the potential of deep learning, reinforcement learning, and other cutting-edge AI/ML approaches to achieve these objectives.

Emeritus Professor Sritawat Kitipornchai Named Highly Cited Researcher: 2019; 2020; 2021; 2022; 2023

Emeritus Professor Sritawat Kitipornchai has been named as a Cross-Field Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate over the past 5 years, in the 2019; 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 editions of their list. There are less than 7000 researchers in the world who made it to the list. The title of Highly Cited Researcher is reserved only for those who have consistently published work with exceptionally high academic impact over a sustain period. Professor Kitipornchai is a world-renowned researcher in structural engineering and applied mechanics. His pioneering studies in a number of areas have been internationally recognized and acknowledged as being at the forefront of their fields. He is one of the most prolific researchers, with a Web of Science h-index of 82, which is one of the highest among civil engineering researchers in Australia.

Professor Kitipornchai has published 20 Highly Cited Papers in recent years in the cross-disciplinary field of engineering mechanics and composite structures. His research on the mechanical performances of composite beams and plates at the micro-/nano- scales was the first of its kind and has had a significant impact on the development of micro-systems in civil, mechanical engineering, such as atomic force microscopes by which the mechanical behaviour of micro-/nano-structures can now be examined.

To address the urgent need for lightweight yet very strong structures with a promising application potentials in various areas such as aircraft, space shuttle, automobiles, marine structures and buildings, Professor Kitipornchai and Professor Jie Yang at RMIT University have led a strong research team to conduct cutting-edge research work on the novel inhomogeneous composite structures reinforced by super strong carbon nanotube or graphene based nanomaterials. This innovative idea is to disperse these nanomaterials non-uniformly with more in the part where they are most needed to achieve significantly improved mechanical properties. They have also introduced non-uniform distribution of internal pores to further reduce the weight of the proposed structures. These pioneering studies have opened up a new avenue for the development of new generation structural forms with an excellent combination of high stiffness and low weight. Their research findings have received extensive citations from peer researchers.

Another notable contribution of Professor Kitipornchai lies in the analysis and design of transmission towers. Together with his former UQ colleague, Professor Faris Albermani, they have developed the only known technique with the ability to simulate accurately the ultimate structural behaviour of latticed transmission tower structures. The current power industry practice requires tower structures to undergo full-scale testing, which is very costly and time consuming. The developed numerical simulation technique has been widely applied in Australia’s power industry. It has the potential to save the industry hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide and to increase the safety of tower structures.

Professor Kitipornchai was elected to the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering in 2009 and to the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2016.

Dr David Lange joined the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Queensland in early 2018. Originally from the the UK, he has a Masters and a PhD, both from the University of Edinburgh. Following completion of his studies, he spent a number of years working in the UK developing fire safety strategies for a range of premises including laboratory and commercial facilities, and residential buildings; as well as conducting fire risk assessments and risk engineering projects in a range of industrail areas including HPR facilities. He then spent 6 years working as a senior research scientist for SP / RISE in Sweden, conducting research in a range of different areas such as fire resistance, facade fire safety, crisis management and infrastructure resilience. His work at the University of Queensland covers a broad range of areas related to fire safety.

David is a Registered Professional Engineering in Queensland (RPEQ), a registered engineer in New South Wales, as well as a Chartered Engineer (CPEng) at the member grade of Fellow with Engineers Australia (FIEAust). He is on the National Engineers Register (NER) in Australia and is an APEC Engineer and an International Professional Engineering registered in Australia (IntPE). He is also a member of the SFPE.

Em. Professor Lockington primarily researchs topics in the area of water transport in coastal soils and aquifers, including water exchange with plants and atmosphere. However, he has also conducted research on moisture transport in building materials and the design of sustainable tourism destinations. In addition to substantial contributions as a reviewer for a wide range of journals and funding bodies, Em. Prof Lockington has held editorial roles on two major journals in the area of hydrology and water resources research (Water Resources Research 2007 - 2012; Advances in Water Resources 1997 - 2020). Em. Prof. Lockington has undertaken a number of leadership roles across his career, including Program Leader for the Sustainable Tourism CRC I and II (Engineering and Design) from 2000 - 2008, Head of the Environmental Engineering Division (School of Engineering, UQ) from 2004 - 2010, and Research Program Leader for the ARC SRI funded National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training from 2009 - 2015. From 2010 to 2020 he frequently acted as Head of the School of Civil Engineering. From 2007 till 2025 he was a Fellow of the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications.
