Overview

Background

Dr Mike Trott is a Research Fellow in Psychiatric Epidemiology and Evidence Synthesis with the Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research, specialising in lifestyle psychiatry, clinical trials, and psychiatric epidemiology.

His current research program addresses three major themes:

  • Physical activity and sedentary behaviour – understanding their impact on mental and physical health and developing interventions to reduce cardiometabolic risk.
  • Clinical trials – applying Bayesian and frequentist designs, adaptive platforms, and individual participant data to improve the efficiency and robustness of mental health research.
  • Evidence translation – contributing to international guideline development, including forthcoming lifestyle guidelines for schizophrenia, and linking research findings to health service delivery.

He has published extensively in psychiatry, public health, and medicine, and his work has informed global organisations such as WHO, OECD, UNESCO, NICE, and the EU Digital Services Act.

Research interests

  • Mental health clinical trials

Statistical analysis and planning of complex clinical trials within mental health, including platform trials and Bayesian statistics.

  • Physical activity promotion in mental illness

Reduction of sedentary behaviours, novel techniques to promote physical activity in severe mental illness.

  • Mental health epidemiology

Including administrative linkage of large datasets pertaining to mental health

Research impacts

Dr Trott has published extensively in the field of psychiatric research, having authored >100 peer reviewed publications (>25% as first author), with >4k citations (h-index 28) and two book chapters.

Dr Trott's work in physical activity and sedentary behaviour has been cited in several international policy documents, including the WHO, NICE, and several national government reports from the EU, UK, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Quebec, Spain, and The Netherlands. Additionally, Mike's research on mitigating children’s screentime resulted in several policy changes in the UK, and recently informed the EU Digital Services Act.

Mike is also an Senior Associate Editor for Epidemiological and Psychiatric Sciences (EPS), and Associate Editor for the Australia New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry (ANZJP). He is a member of the Gold Coast Hospital HREC board, a member of several DSMBs (two as Chair).
