Overview

Background

Mike is a Research Fellow in Psychiatric Epidemiology and Evidence Synthesis with the Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research. Currently Mike works on large, administravely linked datasets and works with statistics in clinical trials. Mike's background was firstly in the UK military, with a subsequent career in the fitness industry - being named the global top fitness instructor in 2015, and European top fitness educator in 2018. Mike then continued his exercise career through academia, completing his PhD in Sport and Exercise Sciences in 2022, and working with the Cambridge Centre for Sport and Exercise Sciences, and the Cambridge Vision and Eye Research Institute post-PhD. Mike's currnet research interests span the umbrella of mental health and statistics - in particular phsyical acitivty promotion in people with severe mental health, intergenerational child maltreatment, and statistical considerations in complex clinical trails.

Research impacts

Mike has published extensively in the field of psychiatric research, having authored 70 peer reviewed publications (19 as first author), with 2,471 citations (2,460 since 2019; h-index 18) and 2 book chapters. Over the past 5 years, Mike has a field-weighted citation impact of 1.86 (221 citations) in psychiatry, 5.29 (244 citations) in general medicine, 12.31 (735 citations) in health professions, and 14.32 (725 citations) in orthopaedics and sports medicine.

Mike's work in physical activity and sedentary behaviour has been cited in several international policy documents, including three policy documents from the WHO, and several national government reports from the EU, UK, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Quebec, Spain, and The Netherlands. Additionally, Mike's research on mitigating children’s screentime resulted in several policy changes in the UK.

Mike is also an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Digital Impacts, a member of the Gold Coast Hospital HREC board, a member of several DSMBs, and a statistical consultant to the Mental Health Australia General Clinical Trials Network (MAGNET).
