Overview
Background
Dr Mike Trott is a Research Fellow with the Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research (QCMHR), The University of Queensland, where he serves as Section Head of Epidemiology and Biostatistics within the Physical and Mental Health Research Group. He specialises in lifestyle psychiatry, clinical trials, and psychiatric epidemiology, with a particular focus on addressing the physical health inequities faced by people with schizophrenia and other severe mental illnesses.
His current research program addresses three major themes:
- Physical activity and sedentary behaviour – understanding their impact on mental and physical health and developing interventions, including the effectiveness of movement breaks to reduce sedentary time and cardiometabolic risk in people with schizophrenia, and the risk profiles of different types of sedentary behaviours.
- Clinical trials – leading the methodological and statistical aspects of a national platform of several schizophrenia clinical trials to find strategies to improve mental and physical health in this population
- Pharmacoepidemiology - using statewide and national linked data to determine the comparative effectiveness of clozapine augmentation strategies for treatment-resistant schizophrenia, as well as examining the mortality gap in several mental illness vs the general population.

Research impacts
Dr Trott has published extensively in the field of psychiatric research, having authored >130 peer reviewed publications, with >4k citations (h-index 28) and two book chapters.
His research is distinguished by a consistent pathway from evidence to practice. As well as an ongoing translation pipeline for subsidised GLP-1 access for people on weight-inducing medications, his previous has been cited in over 120 policy documents worldwide, including the WHO, NICE, UNSECO, and several national government reports from the EU, UK, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Quebec, Spain, and The Netherlands. Additionally, his research on mitigating children’s screentime resulted in several policy changes in the UK, and recently informed the EU Digital Services Act.
Hi is a Senior Associate Editor for Epidemiological and Psychiatric Sciences (EPS), and Associate Editor for the Australia New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry (ANZJP), a member of the Gold Coast Hospital HREC board, and a member of several DSMBs (two as Chair). He also serves as specialist statistical review at The Lancet Psychiatry and statistial consulatnat at the Mental Health Australia General Clinical Trials Network (MAGNET), as well as serving on the Executive Committee of the Australian Clinical Trials Alliance (ACTA) statsitics special interest group and platform trials special interest group.
