Research interests

  • Integrating community with family care for diverse older Australians

Shuang's research explores policy and practice avenues to enable collaboration between care service providers, families and ethnic community associations to support older Australians from diverse cultural backgrounds to age well in Australia. She has been leading ARC projects involving multidisciplinary research team to work with partner organisations including The Federation of Ethnic Communities Council of Australia (FECCA), Ethnic Communities Council Queensland (ECCQ), and Multicultural Communities Council Gold Coast (MCCGC). Shuang's research outcomes inform policies and practice in the aged care sector in Australia.

  • Building a sense of home

Shuang conducts research in the area of place attachment and place identity. Her research addresses the broad question of what migrants from diverse cultural backgrounds do to build identity, belonging, and a sense of home in their settlement country. She has researched on migrants who resided in the settlement country for decades and 1.5 generation and second generation migrants to advance understanding of the meaning of home from the perspectives of migrants. She is interested in improving the well-being of migrants who live in-between cultures.

  • Older migrants ageing in a foreign land

Shuang undertakes research in the ageing experiences of older migrants. Her research is interdisciplinary, integrating theories of acculturation, gerontology, and intercultural communication to identify enablers and barriers to ageing well in a foreign land, including improving social and cultural connectedness among older people. Shuang's research outcomes have impacted practice at community aged care providers in terms of informing the delivery of culturally appropriate care, and tailoring services to the needs of the diverse ageing population.

Research impacts

Shuang works extensively with communities, community aged care service providers, and government offices to identify practice and policy avenues to support older people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to age well in a foreign land. The impact of her research is evidenced by:

  • Her appointment as the Research Advisor of Diversicare/Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland
  • Invited keynote presentations at conferences and invited media presentations
  • Translation of her research into guidelines for practice of community care providers
  • The editorial responsibilities she carries for leading international journals in her field
