Overview

Background

Jaimee is an applied cultural and developmental psychologist and Principal Research Fellow at the UQ Poche Centre for Indigenous Health. Her work examines human development within complex social systems with a focus on the experiences of marginalised, under-represented, and disadvantaged communities. Throughout her career she has worked to support the health and well-being of diverse minority groups (e.g. cultural, religious, gender, and sexual orientation) and those who experience inflated risk factors (e.g., exposure to violence, low socio-economic status, displacement). She is especially interested in how governance, community, and individual-level factors intersect with contemporary social issues including emerging technologies, intercultural relations, and social cohesion. Jaimee focuses on issues of social justice, peace, and equity with an emphasis on the empowerment of Indigenous, migrant and refugee background youth and families.

Jaimee has multisector research and leadership experience across the United Nations, government, and academia in Australia and Aotearoa. Most recently, she was Head of Research (Acting) at the United Nations University Institute in Macau, where she led a team examining the gender digital divide, the ethics of AI, and online violence among civil society in Asia-Pacific. Prior to that she held a senior research role at Griffith University where she led the research strategy for a large project in Logan aimed at alleviating the impacts of place-based disadvantage among diverse cultural groups. Jaimee has extensive experience in both quantitative and qualitative methods, knowledge mobilisation, and stakeholder engagement, and policy advisory.

Research interests

  • Individual and Community Development

The intersection of individual, family, community, and governance-level factors shaping wellbeing, identity, and social cohesion in complex globalised, digitally connected and multicultural sociocultural contexts.

  • Social and Emotional Well-being for Indigenous, Refugee, Migrant and Minority Groups

Human development, identity, and social cohesion for communities navigating displacement, discrimination, disadvantage, and acculturation, with a focus on strengths-based approaches that support wellbeing.

  • Technology, Ethics, Digital Inclusion, and Human Rights

The ethical, social, and gendered implications of emerging technologies — including AI governance, technology-facilitated gender-based violence, cyber-resilience, and the digital divide — with a focus on protecting and empowering marginalised and under-represented communities, including women, youth, and human rights defenders.

  • Transdisciplinary Methodology and Research Design

Mixed-methods, longitudinal, and co-coreation approaches — including systems mapping and priority-setting with diverse stakeholders — used to build research infrastructure that is community-driven, sustainable, and translatable into policy and service delivery.

  • Research capacity building and knowledge mobilisation

Strategic leadership, workforce development, and stakeholder engagement to strengthen research capability and ensure findings reach the communities, services, and policymakers who need them.

Research impacts

I currently lead the research strategy and program management for Professor James Ward's ARC Australian Laureate Fellowship, supporting the establishment of Australia's first transdisciplinary First Nations Urban Research Centre, embedding Indigenous ways of being, knowing , adn doing into its research infrastructure and governance from the outset. Prior to this, at the United Nations University I led a program of research and advocacy on technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV), funded by UN Women, examining cybersecurity risks and resilience for Women Human Rights Defenders and civil society across South and Southeast Asia. This work directly informed briefings to UN Women's Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, the ASEAN Secretariat, and T20 Brasilia, and shaped cyber-resilience training delivered to women's civil society organisations across the region. As Research and Evidence Lead on Pathways in Place, I also developed a systems-mapping and co-creation methodology, still in use, to identify leverage points for reducing the impacts of place-based disadvantage on children and young people. Across these programs, my focus has been on ensuring research is rigorous, community-driven, and structured to translate into real policy and service impact.
