Overview

Background

Professor Gail Robinson is a scientist-practitioner who holds a joint Queensland Brain Institute and the School of Psychology appointment. She has been a clinical neuropsychologist and researcher for ~30 years in Australia and in London (UK), where she spent 14 years at the dynamic and historic National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London. In 2010, she transitioned from a purely clinical role to an academic position at The University of Queensland where was Director of the Clinical Neuropsychology Doctoral programme (2010-2018), taking up this lead role again in 2023. She continues to be a practicing clinician alongside her clinical research which is focused on both theoretical questions about brain-behaviour relationships like the crucial neurocognitive mechanisms for (1) creative thought and problem solving and (2) real-world communication (and the executive control of language), and clinical questions regarding cognitive assessment and management of various pathologies (e.g., neurodegenerative disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, brain tumours and stroke). A big focus is on development of briefer and better early neurocognitive diagnostic indicators for detection of cognitive changes for stroke and dementia. Professor Robinson has attracted internal and national funding; she has led the Neuropsychology Core of large-scale longitudinal and multidisciplinary projects (e.g., NHMRC Dementia Team Research grant: Prospective Imaging Study of Ageing: Genes, Brain and Behaviour - PISA). She has been the recipient of Fellowships (ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) in 2012, NHMRC Boosting Dementia Research Leadership Fellowship in 2018). She is passionate about the integration of practice and training the next generation with discovery research and clinical translation.
