Overview

Background

Professor David McIntyre trained in Endocrinology in Australia and Belgium. He works clinically as Director of Obstetric Medicine at Mater Health Services and is an Emeritus Professor in the Faculty of Medicine (Mater Research). David has published over 250 papers (>25000 citations), primarily in the field of medical complications of pregnancy, with a particular focus on diabetes and obesity. Recent research has examined the effects of diabetes, obesity and hypertension during pregnancy on the health of Mothers and Babies, during pregnancy and with long term follow up. David is a Past Chair of the Australasian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society and the International Association of Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Groups (IADPSG). In 2016, David became the first Australian trained clinician to receive the Norbert Freinkel Award for contributions to diabetes in pregnancy from the American Diabetes Association. Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery and Medical Science, The University of Queensland
  • Doctoral Diploma of Medicine, The University of Queensland
  • Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Royal Australasian College of Physicians

Research interests

  • DIabetes in pregnancy

  • Medical complications of pregnancy

  • Obesity in pregnancy

  • Intensive insulin therapy in Type 1 diabetes

  • Life course epidemiology of cardiometabolic disease

Research impacts

Direct impact on clinical practice:

  • Testing for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Professor McIntyre has been centrally involved in the development and dissemination of the IADPSG recommendations for diagnosis of GDM. This has included membership of the consensus conference, which developed the IADPSG recommendations, and of the writing group, which finalized the proposed criteria. On a national level, he was involved in representations to the college of Obstetrics and Gynecology, ADIPS and the Australian Diabetes Society (ADS) as well as within Queensland) and locally at the Mater Mothers Hospital. He chaired the GDM workgroup for the Statewide Clinical Diabetes Network and was lead author on local GDM guidelines. Internationally, he has been closely involved in similar processes as Chair of IADPSG and a member of the FIGO Pregnancy and Non Communicable Disease (NCD) committee.
  • Intensive diabetes management. Since 2004, he has been a founding member of the OzDAFNE collaboration, which introduced the Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE) system of education in intensive insulin therapy for Type 1 diabetes patients into clinical practice in Australia. This has become the mainstay of such treatment in Queensland and DAFNE courses are now offered in over 20 centres across Australia and New Zealand.

Clinical Practice Guidelines:

Professor McIntyre participated in the development of clinical practice guidelines for Obesity in pregnancy via the Statewide Maternity and Neonatal Network and served as Co-lead of the group which developed a guideline for GDM diagnosis and treatment published in 2015.

Investigator-initiated Clinical Trials:

  • He has been involved in the MiG trial of metformin in the management of gestational diabetes and I have started the first Australian site for the “MiTY” (Metformin in Type 2 diabetes) trial to further examine the use of this medication in pregnancy.
  • He was Chief Investigator B and lead at Mater Health Services for the “SPRING” (Supplementation with Probiotics in Gestation) trial recently reported its negative findings regarding the use of probiotics in GDM prevention.
  • He has initiated two RCTs dealing with lifestyle strategies in the prevention of progression to Type 2 diabetes following GDM.
  • He was CI on a further RCT “TRIM” (Trial of Weight Reduction in New Mums) dealing with optimal dietary follow up to reduce post-partum weight retention in obese pregnant women.

Public Health: Throughhis ole in the National Diabetes in Pregnancy Advisory Committee, he hascontributed to definition of priorities for the care of women with diabetes before, during and after pregnancy. Hiscontributions to GDM care also relate to Public Health as GDM is the commonest identifiable antecedent to overt Type 2 diabetes in parous women.
