Overview

Background

Emeritus Professor Paul Colditz has qualifications in paediatrics, biomedical engineering and medical research.

His research focuses on clinically important perinatal health problems and translation to clinical practice. It includes investigations relating to brain injury and neuroprotection, seizure identification and treatment, neural plasticity and pathways to improving neurodevelopmental outcomes. He is an international leader in the development of the preterm connectome using MRI and of brain networks using dEEG.

Current research projects include (i) clinical cohort studies of high risk infants using MRI, dEEG, genetics and biomarker discovery, and (ii) preclinical research in a piglet model to study neuroprotectants, including progressing a patent he holds of a combined stem cell preparation.

He has key past and current roles in professional bodies, and medical not-for-profit organisations. His experience in knowledge application includes commercialization and the application of research knowledge to clinical practice and health policy.

Research impacts

He has several high impact publications that define current clinical practice (Lancet, JAMA, Am J OG) and holds two patents.

His extensive experience across the whole bench-to-cotside research continuum through to implementation has led to hime being a member or chair of 4 current multicentre RCT DSMBs, including an international first-in-human siRNA industry trial in women with pre-eclampsia.

15% of his publications are in the top 10% of most cited publications worldwide. His metric for policy impact is almost 6 times the average (Field-Normalized Policy Impact 5.97), with 67% of publications having policy impact (Scival 2/8/26), which places him in the top 1% of peers (Almetric Explorer 2/8/26). His average Field-Weighted Citation Impact is 1.33 and average Field-Weighted Views Impact 2.11.
