Research impacts

The following publications showcase Shaun’s extensive experience in undertaking and leading applied clinical research in musculoskeletal and orthopaedic conditions over a range of research methodologies.

1. Implementation Science: O’Leary S, Heine J, Warren J, Smyth T, Ballard E, Mitchell G, See W, Barlas P, Machado GC, Cottrell M, Comans T, Foster NE. (2024) Reinforcing Informed Medication prescription for low back pain in the Emergency department (RIME): a controlled interrupted time-series implementation study protocol. BMJ Open. 14(3):e082668. This is the protocol paper of a large implementation science project I currently lead within Queensland Health.

2. Health Services and Health Economic Research: Raymer M, Swete Kelly P, O'Leary S. (2024) Developing and embedding an advanced practice musculoskeletal physiotherapy service in public specialist outpatient services in Queensland: A health service masterclass. Musculoskeletal Science and Practice. 70, 102917. This publication is the accumulation of health services and health economic research I have co-led within the state-wide Queensland Health Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Screening Clinics & Multidisciplinary Services (MPSC & MDS) resulted in approximately $6.5 million of new investment in service planning changes across multiple Queensland hospital health services.

3. Longitudinal Studies: O'Leary S, Raymer M, Window P, et al. (2020) A multisite longitudinal evaluation of patient characteristics associated with a poor response to non-surgical multidisciplinary management of low back pain in an advanced practice physiotherapist-led tertiary service. BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, 21, 807. This publication was one of two papers I led (the second in knee osteoarthritis published in BMJ Open) that engaged numerous clinicians across multiple Queensland Health sites (8 sites) to identify risk factors for poor outcomes to the non-surgical management of low back pain to assist screening and management decisions in the state-wide Queensland Health Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Screening Clinics & Multidisciplinary Services (MPSC & MDS) .

4. Book Adapted to Multiple Languages: Jull G, Falla D, Treleavan J, O’Leary S. Management of Neck Pain Disorders: A research informed approach. London: Elsevier, 2018. This publication is the second of two books I have co-authored on the management of neck pain that have been distributed widely internationally and adapted to five languages. This book is culminated from the extensive body of research conducted over the last two decades by this books co-author team.

5. Large Scale Clinical Trial in Industry: Johnston V, Jackson K, Welch A, Sjøgaard G, Comans TA, Straker L, Melloh M, Gane E, O’Leary S (2022) An Evaluation of an Exercise and Ergonomics Intervention for the Prevention of Neck Pain in Office Workers: Exploratory analysis of a Cluster Randomised Trial. Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Vol.79 (11), p.767-774, Article oemed-2022-108275 This publication was a large scale NHMRC funded clinical trial conducted in industry that provided employers of office workers sought-after evidence of health-related productivity benefit from workplace-based interventions.
