Overview
Background
Dr. Simon Albert has a background in the fields of natural resource management, water quality, marine ecology and climate change. For the past 15 years he has worked at the intersection of these fields in both Australia and Melanesia providing a gradient of social-political-ecological factors. Through this foundation of land-sea connectivity Dr. Albert has developed integrated monitoring approaches that capture temporally and spatially relevant water quality trends. Dr. Albert has worked on a range of resource projects across Melanesia in both a research and consulting capacity. Over the past 10 years of working closely with communities, government and industry, Dr. Albert has established strong networks and is a highly skilled communicator of environmental monitoring and research.

Research impacts
Dr. Albert has consistently sought to conduct research that can be applied to the challenges faced by society. Central to this has been to explore relationships between natural resource management in the coastal zone and ecosystem service delivery to adjacent human communities. This has led Dr. Albert to be engaged in high profile projects assessing impacts of sea-level rise, harmful algal blooms and run-off from mining operations. As part of these and other projects Dr. Albert has obtained funding from the MacArthur Foundation, National Science Foundation, Australian Government, AusAID, Sumitomo Metal Mining, UNDP, WHO and The Nature Conservancy. In addition to 30 peer reviewed journal articles, Dr albert has also published books and directed films to communicate environmental issues to the broader society. This combination of applied research and communication skills has led to Dr. Albert's work being reported by BBC, CNN, National Geographic, Time magazine, Washington Post and The Guardian.
