Overview
Background
I am a senior researcher with cross-disciplinary expertise in health economics, pharmacy practice, and virtual health solutions. I am passionate about optimising healthcare outcomes by developing economically sustainable services that use technology and artificial intelligence to empower patients. My work explores the economic efficiency of implementing either virtual health or advanced-scope clinician initiatives within the Australian health system to improve patient care.
I am also a clinical pharmacist with more than a decade of experience in patient care and clinician training. I am a health economist at the UQ Centre for Online Health, and I lead the research work in the Pharmacy Department at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.

Research impacts
I am nationally and internationally recognised for my research work in pharmacy practice, telehealth, and smoking cessation. My work in these areas have been cited in policy documents from the UN OECD, the EU, The US Congress, the UK Government, RVM (German national telehealth policy), RAND Corporation, Memorial Sloan Kettering Centre and the Netherlands National Institute for Public Health. Selected specific examples include:
• Telehealth (58+ articles): I am the leading Australian health economist in the areas of telehealth and virtual health care. My extensive work in this space resulted in the Australian Productivity Commissioner reaching out to me in 2023 to support their telehealth commission and their review of funding. Similarly, in 2020 I led a consultancy for the Australian Primary Healthcare Commission where we wrote a report characterising the current state of telehealth and outlining suggestions for the primary care 10 year plan. In 2020 I created a public facing webpage to track telehealth MBS uptake in Australia during the COVID pandemic which is still live and continues to receive hundreds of views per month, and has resulted in five+ academic publications (including a Viewpoint article in JAMA) and 40+ grey literature citations.
• Pharmacy Practice (32+ articles): My pharmacy research has resulted in Queensland Health investing over $3M AUD to create 20 permanent advanced scope positions, including a full-time smoking cessation pharmacist for Metro North in Brisbane. These health service evaluations are published in international peer-reviewed journals, serving as roadmaps for other domestic and international health services. My research also resulted in legislative changes to the 2021 QLD Medicines and Poisons Regulations, and has enabled over 6,200 advanced scope pharmacist inpatient interactions, and 13,800 outpatient interactions since commencement. In recognition of my expertise, I was one of the nationally recognized experts invited to contribute to the Sustainability themes in the 2024 AdPhA Pharmacy Forecast Australia report.
• Smoking Cessation (6+ articles): My research in hospital-based pharmacist-led smoking cessation breif interventions has demonstrated the effectiveness of pharmacists within this advanced scope role, and resulted in implementation of pharmacists into this role in Queensland. Between 2020-2023 I was part of a selected team of world experts led by Prof Gartner and Dr Puljevic that collated evidence for the World Health Organisation WHO clinical treatment guideline for tobacco cessation in adults, contributing primarily to the evidence regarding text messaging programs (i.e. asynchronous telehealth).
